Non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) is the energy expended for everything we do that is not sleeping, eating or formal exercise.
Examples of NEAT activities?
NEAT activities can include anything from walking the dog, cooking, carrying the shopping home, doing the gardening, playing with your children at the park, washing the car, or even fidgeting at your desk.
Can you lose weight with NEAT?
NEAT contributes to weight loss by increasing energy expenditure. It tips the equation by helping the body burn extra calories. Even light physical activity burns more calories than doing nothing at all. Some researchers suggest that NEAT can help reduce human obesity.
The percentage of calories per day burned through NEAT is different for everyone, but on average it's between 15% and 30%.
NEAT is simple. Find ways to move your body all day long!
